This site is hosted on a Linux server run by a company called 4uHosting who provide me with a very good deal for hosting this site, and very good service.

I played with a number of website frameworks until I finally decided to settle on the Wiki concept. I found it easier to use and much more convenient than many of the CMS solutions I played with.

I chose DokuWiki because it provided me with all the main features I required (in no particular order):

• Pages are stored in text files, making backup and maintenance really easy.
• It supports a hierarchical structure; using namespaces.
• It provides syntax highlighting for code snippets
• Excellent support for plugins, and there are some good ones out there.
• Runs on any PHP enabled webserver, including the free Apache webserver as well as the proprietary and expensive IIS webserver from Microsoft.
• It's standards compliant (CSS, XHTML)
• It's open source

I've customised the default theme to suit my own tastes, proving just how versatile dokuwiki is.

My blog runs using Wordpress. I didn't spend as much time choosing blog software as I did choosing a wiki; it's not as important to me, and I don't have high demands of it. In the end I chose Wordpress because it is open source, and because it seemed to be one of the most popular choices out there.
