EMail Setup

I use a fetchmail → postfix → procmail → spam assassin → courier IMAP system for my incoming mail setup. I used to use Squirrelmail as a web-based email system, but have recently switched to RoundCube which is considerably more modern and shows great promise.

Fetchmail is used to retrieve email messages from my various email accounts. My home computer is not used to receive emails directly.

Postfix is the mail transport handler, and passes emails on to procmail.

Procmail is a message filtering program. Messages are fed through it and compared to a number of rules and action is taken based on rule matches. Procmail calls the spamassassin program to check email for spam, it then filters spam email into a spam folder, and sorts the remaining incoming email into other folders for me, e.g. messages from Amazon, or from mailing lists go into their own folders.

Procmail delivers the email messages into MailDir directory structure, which is used by Courier IMAP server to serve up my email to clients, e.g. KMail, Thunderbird and SquirrelMail.
